British artist John Hanson Walker (1844-1933) was a fashionable society portrait painter of the late Victorian era, early Edwardian period. He was born in Bath in 1844 to a dealer of curiosities and as a boy modelled for Lord Frederick Leighton who not only encouraged him to become an artist but also mentored him. Walker was accepted by the Royal Academy Schools and exhibited there from 1872 to 1918, establishing himself as an artist of great talent. His works are held in many public collections are including the National Trust, Derby Museum and Art Gallery and Victoria Art Gallery, Bath.
